Key Facts at a Glance

Is There a Bus from Doha to Riyadh?
Yes. Experience Qatar now offers GCC Bus, a scheduled executive coach service between Doha, Riyadh and Bahrain. The service uses two coaches on opposite loops. Bus A travels Doha, Riyadh, Bahrain and back to Doha. Bus B travels Doha, Bahrain, Riyadh and back to Doha. The Doha to Riyadh leg on Bus A departs on Sundays and travels via Hofuf Oasis.
What Is the Route from Doha to Riyadh?
The overland journey follows three stages.
- Doha to the Qatari border. Abu Samra is Qatar’s only land crossing into Saudi Arabia and lies about 80 km south of Doha. The Saudi side of the same crossing is known as Salwa.
- The border crossing. Passengers complete Qatari exit and Saudi entry formalities. GCC Bus coordinators help passengers through clearance, so you are not left to work out the process alone.
- Eastern Province to Riyadh. After Salwa, the road runs across Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. Hofuf, also known as Al-Ahsa, sits about 265 km from Doha and is the main stop on the route. From there the coach continues to Riyadh. The total road distance from Doha to Riyadh is about 576 km.
Hofuf is one of the best-known oasis regions on the Arabian Peninsula. The stop breaks up the desert drive and gives passengers time to rest and stretch before the final leg.
How Long Does the Doha to Riyadh Bus Take?
The scheduled window runs from 08:00 to 17:00, which is about nine hours. A private car can cover the distance in about six and a half hours of pure driving, so it helps to understand why the coach schedule is longer. The scheduled time includes the border crossing for a full group of passengers, a rest and meal stop, and the pause in Hofuf.
Treat the arrival time as a planning guide rather than a guarantee. Border queues grow during Eid, weekends and school holidays, so avoid scheduling tight connections or meetings right after you arrive.
What Documents Do You Need?
Every passenger should carry the following:
- A passport valid for at least 6 months
- A national ID card
- A valid GCC residence permit, if you live in a GCC country
- A valid Saudi visa or e-visa, if your nationality requires one
GCC residents. Since 2023, Saudi Arabia has offered its tourist e-visa to all GCC residents regardless of profession, provided the residence permit is valid for at least three months. You apply online through the official Visit Saudi platform. GCC citizens do not need a visa to enter Saudi Arabia. Fees and rules can change, so confirm the current details before you book.
First-time visitors. Biometric registration is required on a first entry to Saudi Arabia. If this is your first trip, expect the border step to take a little longer and keep your documents ready.
Pre-registration. Qatar offers optional pre-registration for the Abu Samra crossing. Citizens and residents use the Metrash2 app, while other GCC citizens and visitors use the Hayya platform. Pre-registered travellers can use a dedicated fast lane. Ask the Experience Qatar team how this applies to your booking.
Entry requirements depend on your nationality, so check the rules for your own passport with the Saudi authorities before you travel.

Doha to Riyadh: Bus, Car or Flight?

If speed is your top priority, flying from Hamad International Airport to King Khalid International Airport is quicker. If you prefer a comfortable, supported overland trip, without driving or arranging vehicle paperwork, the bus is the better choice. It also lets you see the Eastern Province and the Hofuf oasis rather than flying over them.
Make the Most of Your Time in Riyadh
The GCC Bus weekly schedule is built around more than transport. After the Sunday arrival, Bus A runs a full Riyadh and Diriyah Discovery day on Monday from 10:00 to 18:00. Diriyah is the historic district on the edge of Riyadh and is known as the birthplace of the first Saudi state. Passengers who want to continue the journey can then travel on to Bahrain on Tuesday via Khobar, which makes it easy to see Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain in a single week.
